Jon Warren shares a glimpse of the Reining Cow Horse class at Oakridge back in the summer.

revolutionizing-uk039s-reined-cow-horse-scene-jonDiamond, a 15 year old Welsh palomino, owned by Laura Cohen, is the horse I competed in the ‘Reined cow horse’ competition held at the Oakridge Arena Summer Sizzler 2023 for the first time in the UK (cattle kindly supplied by Sudbrooke Park Cattle Company).

I have been training Diamond over the past few months to learn the basics of reining, cutting, boxing and down the fence. Being the only Welsh pony in the class of 13 quarter horses, she did well to come home with a 5th.

Having attended several clinics at Sudbrooke Park cattle company over the past few months, I have trained with Tom Wilkinson, who owns Sudbrooke Park Cattle company, and different professional riders who have come over from Europe - Gaëtan Foulatier who specialises in cutting and Federico Fanti Performance Horses who specialises in the reined cow horse. These trainers have been a real eye opener to learn more about the sport in the UK, and it's fantastic to see the sport grow.

I have previously come from a showjumping background, where I have trained showjumpers and problem horses. I also teach horsemanship under the name of Jon Warren Horsemanship, helping problem horses with various issues, such as problems with loading, groundwork, mounting issues, starting youngsters and colts.

After selling my very talented showjumper, I decided to buy two young quarter horses with the aim of developing them as cow horses, and to eventually sell them on.

This is now the direction I would like to focus on, selling trained cow horses in the UK, as they are so rare to find. I am fortunate to be sponsored by Ranch Hides, a luxury western tack & accessories brand.
